Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park
Anangu welcome you to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, a living cultural landscape where earth and memories exist as one.
The cultural landscapes of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park resonate with meaning. They contain Tjukurpa (creation stories in local Pitjantjatjara language) and the associated knowledge of law, relationships, plants, and animals, all of which live in the features of the land.
From mystical waterholes at the base of Uluru to the rock art wall paintings of the Anangu teachers, the National Park walking tracks are the ideal way to explore the living features of the park.

Wildlife Information
Ayers Rock Resort operates in a delicate environment where much of the flora and fauna is unique to the region and protected by law. Due to the ever-changing climate we live and operate in, a variety of insects, small animals, and reptiles may be seen around the Resort.
We've put together a list of some of our local creatures and a few points on how you can protect yourselves as well as the animal.
Mice
There are many native rodents and small marsupials seen around the Resort that can be mistaken for your common house mice. Two common species you might encounter are:
- Spinifex Hopping Mouse - the nocturnal mouse may be seen hopping around at Uluru and Yulara. They are native to Yulara and are usually seen at night in open areas.
- Sandy Inland Mouse - looks very similar to the introduced horse mouse. The main differences are they have bigger eyes, hairier ears, and, we think they're cuter!
Although these mice are harmless and friendly, here are some tips to help prevent them from entering your room:
- Ensure all doors are closed and any gaps are covered up - try using a rolled-up towel to cover the bottom of the doorway.
- Ensure any loose crumbs and food are packed in the cupboards and sealed away.
- Don't leave food scraps on your balcony or patio.
Snakes
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and surrounds are home to 13 different species of snakes, 8 of which are venomous. Here are some of the various snakes and some information on how you can protect yourself and the snake if you happen to come across one:
- Liru (King Brown or Mulga Snake) - the Mulga Snake has the largest recorded venom output of any snake in the world. Mulga Snakes tend to have a broader head and "heavier" build, they can be brown, a reddish brown, coppery brown, or brownish black and grow to 3 metres long. Despite their high venom potency, they mostly eat lizards, birds, and frogs.
- Kuniya (Woma Python) - Woma pythons can grow up to 1.5 metres in length. You are unlikely to see them in the day as they are nocturnal. If you are walking at night, you should keep an eye on the ground, wear shoes - preferably closed-in shoes - and stay on designated pathways. They catch their prey in burrows, and often spend the days under logs or leaves to keep cool. Womas are non-venomous, however a bite is painful and may result in swelling and short-term pain.
- Panakura (Desert Death Adder) - The Desert Death Adder camouflages itself and uses its thin tail to imitate a worm and attract prey. They are extremely venomous and easily identifiable by their short stocky body and flat head.
If you happen to come across a snake, assume that it is highly venomous and deadly. Remain calm and keep your distance. Be patient and wait for it to decide to move. If you do get bitten, please seek medical attention immediately. Call 000 or (08) 8956 2286 (Yulara Medical Centre).
Insects
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and Ayers Rock Resort are home to all types of insects, ants, and flies. They're important to the desert ecosystem and are an important food source to the native wildlife. We understand these insects can cause discomfort, so we suggest:
- Wear a fly net, which can be purchased at various stores throughout the Resort.
- Use an insect repellent spray which you can purchase at IGA in Town Square or Shell Petrol Station.
Centipedes
An Australian native, most likely to be encountered after the rain:
- There are no ways to prevent them. Shake out clothes before wearing if you've left them lying on the ground.
- Seek medical attention if bitten.
When exploring Ayers Rock Resort and the National Park, the easiest way to keep yourself and our beautiful wildlife safe is to always remain on footpaths and designated walking tracks.
We are committed to managing the Resort in an environmentally sensitive and responsible manner and work closely with the traditional owners and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to ensure its environment is maintained for many years to come.
We hope you enjoy your stay with us and should you require any assistance, please contact your hotel reception.
